Dendrochronology is one of the most powerful techniques for dating historic wooden panels. But a tree ring dates the wood, not automatically the painting. Between the youngest measurable ring, the felling of the tree and the moment a painter put brush to panel lie several separate stages. And it is precisely there that art-historical interpretation begins.
From tree ring to calendar year
Dendrochronology, literally the dating of wood by means of tree rings, is based on a simple principle. A tree forms a new growth ring each year. The width of that ring varies under the influence of factors including climatic conditions. Trees from the same region therefore display corresponding patterns of relatively broad and narrow rings over longer periods of time.
In a wooden artwork, such a sequence of tree rings is measured and compared with already dated reference chronologies. When the sequence is sufficiently long and corresponds convincingly with a known chronology, individual rings can be assigned to specific calendar years. The technique is used both to date oak objects and to investigate the geographical origin of the wood.[1]

In panel paintings, tree rings are preferably measured where they are clearly visible in the transverse section of the plank. In the past, this was often done directly using a hand lens and measuring equipment. Today, high-resolution digital macro photography and specialised software can be used.
Not every wooden panel is equally suitable for this method. Oak is particularly well suited to the study of Northern European panel paintings and consequently represents an important field of dendrochronological research. Poplar, widely used for Italian paintings, is far less suitable for conventional dendrochronological dating because of its more irregular growth pattern.[2] But even when an oak panel has been successfully dated, the date of the painting itself has not yet been established.
The youngest ring is not the felling date
The first question after a successful measurement is therefore: how much of the original tree is still present?
An oak trunk consists of heartwood surrounded by sapwood, with the bark forming the outermost layer. When planks were sawn and prepared, part of this outer wood was generally removed. The youngest tree ring that can now be measured at the edge of a painting therefore need not be the final ring formed by the tree before it was felled.

When only heartwood survives, we know that the tree was felled after the calendar year represented by the outermost measured ring. How many years are missing, however, cannot be determined directly from the panel. In that case, the dendrochronological date essentially provides a terminus post quem: a date before which the panel cannot have been made.
If some sapwood is still present, however, the possible felling date can be estimated more precisely. And when the complete sapwood survives up to the original outer edge of the tree, the final growth ring, and therefore the year in which the tree was felled, can under favourable circumstances be determined with considerable precision.[3]
Baltic oak and dendroprovenance
Much of the high-quality oak used in Western Europe between the late Middle Ages and the seventeenth century arrived through extensive trade networks from regions to the east and south of the Baltic Sea.[4]
Dendrochronologists can therefore use growth patterns not only for dating, but also compare them with regional chronologies to investigate the probable origin of the wood: dendroprovenance. A sequence of tree rings can thus provide information both about when a tree grew and about the trade networks through which the material probably reached a panel maker or artist’s workshop.[5]

From felled tree to painting
Even a precisely determined felling date is still not the date of the painting. After the tree was felled, the timber had to be processed, transported and seasoned, the plank sawn and made into a panel. The panel might then remain in stock with a panel maker, dealer or painter for some time before it was prepared with a ground and painted.
In the past, this intervening period has often been generalised. Dendrochronological reports and art-historical literature regularly added fixed numbers of years as an assumed period for seasoning or storage. In reality, the intervening years could encompass transport, drying, manufacture of the panel and possible storage by intermediaries or artists. The longer interval associated with eastern Baltic timber is probably due in part to this longer logistical chain.[6]
When two paintings come from the same tree
Dendrochronology can reveal something else of particular interest to connoisseurship. Planks from different paintings may display such closely corresponding tree-ring patterns that research indicates they probably came from the same tree.[6]
This can reveal aspects of workshop practice. Painters may have purchased several panels at the same time; different artists could apparently obtain panels made by the same panel maker or supplied by the same source. An otherwise undatable work that shares timber with a convincingly dated painting can therefore acquire an important new chronological clue.

The power of a negative result
For attribution, dendrochronology is perhaps at its most powerful when it rules something out. If an artist died in 1600 and the tree from which a panel was made can be shown to have been felled only after 1610, the painting in its present form cannot have been painted on that panel during the artist’s lifetime.
A panel whose wood may have been available in 1580 does not prove that it was painted by an artist active in 1580. Old wood could be used or reused at a later date. A compatible dendrochronological date therefore makes an attribution possible or chronologically compatible, but does not prove it.
The same applies to a signature. Dendrochronology can demonstrate that the wood is chronologically incompatible with a purported signature; it cannot establish whose hand applied the paint. Technical examination is therefore one component of attribution alongside style, painting technique, provenance, documentation, material analysis and other art-historical evidence.
A dendrochronological report must also be verifiable
This is all the more important because dendrochronological research itself can be re-examined.[7] For a collector, dealer or researcher, the summary statement ‘dendrochronologically dated’ is therefore not sufficient on its own. A sound report records which plank was examined, how many rings were measured, the date of the youngest measured ring, whether heartwood and sapwood could be distinguished, which reference chronologies were used, the strength of the statistical correlations, the proposed provenance of the wood and the assumptions used to move from the youngest ring to a possible felling or use date.
What does dendrochronology actually date?
The most precise answer is less straightforward than ‘the painting’. Dendrochronology first dates the growth of the wood. The youngest surviving ring and the presence or absence of sapwood are then used to establish the earliest possible or probable felling date. It must subsequently be assessed how much time may reasonably have elapsed between the felling, transport, seasoning and processing of the timber and the eventual use of the panel.
Only when these different stages are kept separate does the dendrochronological result acquire its full art-historical meaning.
A dendrochronological result can significantly refine a chronology, suggest a workshop connection, reveal patterns of timber trade or make an attribution chronologically impossible. But it cannot independently establish when paint was applied to the wood, still less who held the brush.
