Successfully positioning a painting in the market begins with understanding exactly what you have in your hands. Art-historical research can make the difference between a work that is offered with only limited context and one whose significance, provenance and commercial potential are convincingly substantiated.
Bringing a painting to auction or offering it to a dealer without thorough preliminary research carries the risk that important clues may be overlooked. An incorrect attribution, insufficient knowledge of the work’s provenance or a missed art-historical context can directly affect the way a painting is positioned and, ultimately, valued. For that reason, we place considerable emphasis on analysing, categorising and contextualising paintings.
As part of an initial art-historical assessment, we consider, among other aspects, subject matter and iconography, style and technique, possible dating and geographical origin, provenance, relevant artists and workshops, comparable works, literature, and the potential position of the painting within the art market. Where appropriate, we also take publicly available auction results and market data into account.
The objective is not to arrive at a definitive conclusion prematurely, but rather to ask the right questions and identify meaningful avenues for further research. A well-founded dossier may reveal new connections, refine an existing attribution or provide a basis for more specialised investigation. In doing so, it creates a considerably stronger foundation for any subsequent steps within the art trade or auction market.
We are pleased to examine works of this nature because every painting offers an opportunity to deepen existing knowledge of an artist, workshop, period or artistic tradition. Even established dealers and auction houses may, by necessity, be limited in the amount of research they can undertake. Specialist expertise, available time and documentation vary from one work to another. For the owner, it is therefore particularly important to uncover as much relevant information as possible before considering a potential sale.
